It is January 17, 2020 and we arrived in the city of Cartagena (KAR-te-JEE-ne or US: KAR-te-HAY-ne). The city was named after Cartagena, Spain and was founded on June 1, 1533. It has a population of one million people.

Cartagena has a tropical wet and dry climate. Humidity averages around 90%, with rainy seasons typically in May and June and October and November. The climate tends to be hot and windy.

Colombian emeralds account for 70 percent of the world's emerald market and are said to be among the purest emeralds in the world.
